Dubuque IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints dropped preseason matchup 3-0 to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday, despite outshooting Cedar Rapids 29-17 in the contest.

Cedar Rapids opened the scoring at 9:00 of the first period when Matas Janulius converted on the power play. Janulius scored the only goal of the first period.

Dubuque responded with pressure of its own, outshooting Cedar Rapids 13-6 in the second period. Fighting Saints goaltender Luke Carrithers stopped all six shots in the second, and 14 of 16 overall. Late in the period, Trevor Theuer couldn't convert on a penalty shot for Dubuque.

The Saints continued to put on pressure in the third, but Cedar Rapids extended its lead at 13:06 when Sullivan Miller scored another Rider power-play goal. Melvin Ekman had a chance with 3:28 to play with Dubuque's second penalty shot of the night, but couldn't convert. Theo Vantine added an empty-net goal with 1:14 remaining to wrap up the scoring.

Dubuque went 0-for-3 on the power play and was unable to solve Cedar Rapids goaltender Joseph Skidmore, who stopped all 27 shots he faced. 

Dubuque opens the regular season on Thursday against the Lincoln Stars at the USHL Fall Classic.
