DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (14-3-1-2, 31 pts) scored three third-period goals to down the Des Moines Buccaneers (8-8-4-0, 20 pts) 5-2 on Saturday night.
For the second-straight night, the Saints led 2-1 after two periods on Saturday. After allowing two goals in the third period of Friday's loss, the Saints bounced back to score twice in 1:27 early in the third on Saturday. Fisher Scott started that barrage with his third of the season, assisted by Nick Romeo and Joona Väisänen. Then, Noah Powell scored his fourth goal in his last four games to put the Saints ahead by three.
It was Romeo who opened the scoring for the second-straight game, giving the Saints a lead 11:06 into regulation. Seamus Powell assisted on Romeo's one-timer to score the Saints' first of two power-play goals in the opening period. The two chances were their only two of the night after failing on all four chances in Friday's loss.
Jake Sondreal broke a 1-1 tie in the first period for the Saints' second power-play goal of the period. It was Sondreal's 11th of the season, assisted by Charlie Arend and James Reeder. Arend had two assists in the win, also helping on Powell's goal.
Dubuque's penalty kill was a major factor in Saturday's win. Dubuque killed off five of six penalties, including two in the final six minutes of regulation.
Goaltender Kevin Reidler stopped 23 of 25 shots he faced in his 11th win of the season, including stopping all 12 shots he faced in the second period.
Gavin Cornforth capped the win with an empty-netter in the final second of regulation for his 11th goal of the season.
The Saints head back to Des Moines on Friday next week before hosting Lincoln on Saturday night.
