KEARNEY, NE - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (7-1-1-1, 16 pts) earned a 4-2 victory on Saturday night over the Tri-City Storm (7-3-0-0, 14 pts) to complete a two-win weekend in Nebraska.
The Fighting Saints held two separate one-goal leads before Seamus Powell's power-play goal broke a 2-2 tie with just under nine minutes left in the third period. It was Powell's second of the season and lifted the Saints on top for the third, and final, time.
Dubuque had three goals scored by defensemen in the win, with Luke Malboeuf scoring his first career goal and Fisher Scott scoring his first of the season.Â
"Outstanding effort by everyone tonight to complete the road sweep," said head coach Kirk MacDonald. "We did a great job managing our game, got timely scoring from our defensemen and won the special teams battle against one of the best teams in the USHL."
Dubuque took an early lead with Malboeuf's goal, jumping to a 1-0 advantage just 2:34 into the game. In the second period, after Tri-City tied the contest at one, Scott netted the go-ahead goal. Those two defensemen were followed by Powell's game-winner in the third.
Kevin Reidler continued his strong start to the season with a 30-save performance. He made 11 saves in the third period to hold the lead for Dubuque and secure his fourth win of the season.
The Saints' power-play converted again on Saturday with Powell's tally. Dubuque's man-advantage has 16 goals this season and has a goal in every game in which it has had an opportunity this season.
The Fighting Saints added an empty-net goal late in the third with James Reeder and held on late for the 4-2 win.
Dubuque's next game is at home against the same Tri-City squad on Friday night.
