Powell’s Overtime Goal Lifts Saints to Series Lead

Dubuque Takes 2-1 Lead in Conference Semifinals

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - Noah Powell scored with 26.4 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Dubuque Fighting Saints past the Youngstown Phantoms in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals and give Dubuque a 2-1 series lead.

Game 3 of the tied series spent almost the entire regulation scoreless on Tuesday night in Youngstown. Despite a pair of power plays for each team, Kevin Reidler and Aiden Wright were both perfect through the first two periods.

With just under seven to play in the third, Phantoms captain Andrew Strathmann took a tripping penalty to give Dubuque a 4-on-3 power play. Just 25 seconds later, Lucas St. Louis found James Reeder on the back door to redirect the first goal of the game. It was Reeder's first of the playoffs and it broke the scoreless stalemate.

In the final minutes, Ryan Botterill moved up the left wing and spotted Mikey Burchill on a cross-ice pass. Burchill ripped a puck past Reidler as the Saints' goaltender was falling down and tied the game with 1:42 remaining in the third.

After a few chances for both teams early in overtime, the Fighting Saints took control of the overtime frame. Dubuque outshot Youngstown 15-6 in the extra frame, including a handful on a power play that began with 3:26 left in the period. Dubuque could not capitalize on the power play, but continued to put pressure on the Phantoms.

Then, in the final minute, Reeder found Powell who cycled up top and let a shot fly. The puck deflected off a stick and looped over Wright into the net to give Dubuque the win in the final minute of overtime.

Reidler finished the night with 28 saves on 29 shots. He's allowed three total goals over the first three games of the series and has stopped 70 shots to help the Saints to a 2-1 series lead.

The Fighting Saints will aim to win the series in Game 4 on Wednesday night in Youngstown.
