DALLAS, TX - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (24-9-2-3, 53 pts) used special teams to erase a 2-0 deficit and beat the Sioux Falls Stampede (20-15-3-1, 44 pts) 3-2 in overtime on Friday night.
In an overtime period in which the Saints were outshooting the Stampede 4-1, the Fighting Saints found a puck in their own zone and stormed up ice with Erik Påhlsson and Michael Barron. Påhlsson peeled to the left wing and lofted a pass toward the net, where Barron swatted it out of the air and into the net for the game-winning goal.
Dubuque forced overtime after falling behind 2-0 for the second-straight night. In the second, James Reeder forced a turnover and converted on a short-handed breakaway chance to get Dubuque on the board with his 15th goal. Later in the second period, Jake Sondreal scored a power-play one-timer for his 17th goal and league-leading 50th point of the season and the Saints tied the game.
After a scoreless third period, Barron's winning goal gave the Saints their first lead of the entire Frosty Cup series with Sioux Falls.
Dylan Johnson made 26 saves in his USHL debut in his hometown at the American Airlines Center.
With the comeback-win, the Fighting Saints earned three of four points in the Frosty Cup weekend in Texas. They are back in action for one game at home against Chicago on Friday night.
