GREEN BAY, WI - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (18-6-1-2, 39 pts) defeated the Green Bay Gamblers (16-6-2-1, 35 pts) in overtime on Saturday night to win their third game in as many nights.
After surrendering two separate leads in regulation, the Fighting Saints began overtime with a faceoff win by captain Jake Sondreal. In the opening shift of overtime, Sondreal found Fisher Scott down the wing and Scott buried his fourth goal of the season to sweep the three-win weekend for the Saints.
During regulation, the Fighting Saints scored on all three power-play chances they had. They opened the scoring with Lucas St. Louis' league-leading eighth power-play goal of the season.
After extending their lead with another power-play goal from Erik Påhlsson, the Saints allowed two goals early in the second period to tie the game at two.Â
Later in the second, Nick Romeo scored for the third-straight night to give the Saints their lead back. Again, the Saints were unable to hold the lead in the third, allowing their first power-play goal against in the last three games.
Dubuque was forced to kill three penalties in the first few minutes of the third, and allowed the tying goal to Ben Poitras on the Gambler's power play.
James Norton bounced back after allowing two goals on eight shots in the second to stop nine of 10 in the third. Norton recorded his second win in as many nights in his first two USHL contests, making 27 saves total in Saturday's win.
The Fighting Saints' three wins this week leave Dubuque three points ahead of second-place Youngstown at the top of the Eastern Conference heading into the holiday break.
