CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Led by their special teams, the Dubuque Fighting Saints (17-6-1-2, 37 pts) defeated the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (9-13-3-1, 22 pts) 5-2 on Friday night
Holding a 3-2 lead with 2:12 left in the second period, Jayden Jubenvill was assessed a major penalty and the Saints began a five-minute penalty kill. Dubuque killed all five minutes to keep its one-goal lead.
The Saints penalty kill finished off all three chances it had tonight, recording its third-straight game without allowing a goal. On the power play, the Fighting Saints scored two more goals on three chances in Friday's win.
After Nick Romeo's overtime goal on the power play in Thursday's win, the Fighting Saints excelled again on the power play. The Saints allowed two unanswered goals after leading 1-0 in Friday's contest before Romeo tied the game up in the second period. Just a few minutes after that, Lucas St. Louis scored his league-leading seventh power-play goal of the year on a feed from Noah Powell.
Later in the game, Powell scored his own power-play goal to extend the Saints' lead to 4-2.
In his USHL debut, James Norton made 22 saves on 24 shots, including a breakaway save in the third period to keep the Saints' one-goal lead intact.
Dubuque's fourth line added offense on Friday for the second-straight game as well. Teddy Merrill scored his fifth on assists from linemates Josh Giuliani and Andrew King.
Jake Sondreal finished the night with an empty-netter as the Saints moved three points clear of Green Bay and Youngstown at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Dubuque matches up on the road with Green Bay on Saturday in the final game before the holiday break.
