DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (11-2-1-2, 25 pts) scored three third-period goals on Saturday night to claim a 4-1 win over the Youngstown Phantoms (11-4-1-0, 23 pts).
Dubuque's power play broke a 1-1 tie with Lucas St. Louis' fourth goal of the season just 1:55 into the third period. The Saints followed 34 seconds later with Charlie Arend's fourth of the season to take a two-goal advantage.Â
Six minutes after that, a major penalty was called against Dubuque's Teddy Merrill. The Fighting Saints killed off the entirety of the Youngstown power play to keep their lead intact.
Forward Gavin Cornforth broke a four-game goal drought on Saturday night, scoring twice. His first goal tied the game at 6:00 of the second period, before his empty-net goal iced the game for Dubuque.
The win launched Dubuque into sole possession of the top spot in the Eastern Conference. After holding first-place, the Fighting Saints' shootout loss on Friday brought Youngstown into a tie for the lead. On Saturday, Dubuque regained the lead in the Eastern Conference.
Goaltender Kevin Reidler logged his eighth win of the season, stopping 24 of 25 shots in Saturday's victory.
The Fighting Saints begin a three-game road trip on Friday night in Waterloo.
