DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (10-2-1-2, 23 pts) fell 5-4 in a shootout to the Youngstown Phantoms (11-3-1-0, 23 pts) on Friday night.
The Fighting Saints fell behind just 58 seconds into the first on Friday night before Michael Barron netted his sixth goal of the season to level the score just about halfway through the period. It was the first of two deficits the Fighting Saints overcame to force the game into overtime.
After the Phantoms controlled the puck for most of overtime, the Fighting Saints failed to score in the shootout. Kevin Reidler stopped two of three Youngstown attempts, but Finn McLaughlin scored his chance to give Youngstown the extra point. Reidler made 21 saves in the shootout loss.Â
James Reeder continued his torrid stretch in the loss, scoring his sixth of the season. The goal extended his point-streak to six games.
Teddy Merrill scored for a second-straight game for Dubuque, tallying his fourth of the season to give the Saints a 3-2 lead in the second period.
Two goals early in the third, with one coming on the power play, for Youngstown put the Saints behind again. Caelum Dick roared back to score his first of the season with 4:54 left in the third period and force overtime.
Both teams are tied in points atop the Eastern Conference and meet again on Saturday to wrap up the weekend set in Dubuque.
