GREEN BAY, WI - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (4-0-1-1, 10 pts) held on in the third period for a 4-3 road-win over the Green Bay Gamblers (3-3-0-0, 6 pts) on Saturday night.
After a back-and-forth start to the third period that began with the Saints leading 2-0, Gavin Cornforth converted on a great setup from Chase LaPinta to give the Saints a 4-2 advantage with 7:34 left in the game.
Dubuque held on from there to complete a weekend-sweep of Green Bay. Kevin Reidler made a plethora of big saves for the Saints in the game, finishing with 31 saves on 34 shots faced. He didn't allow a goal until 8:14 into the third period, ending a ??135:23 shutout streak dating back to the Saints' win at Cedar Rapids on Sept. 30.
On the other end of the ice, the Saints continued their dynamic start to the season. They scored four goals again, a mark they have reached in all six games so far this season. Saturday's win came in a much different variety than Friday's 9-0 shutout win.
Dubuque jumped to a 2-0 lead after two periods with a first-period goal by Juraj Pekarcik (2) and a second-period goal from Michael Barron (3).
In the third, Green Bay scored its first and then the teams traded goals until time ran out on Green Bay to find a tying goal late.
Dubuque's scoring leaders continued to pace the team. Erik Påhlsson scored his fifth of the season and extended his team lead to 12 points through six games. LaPinta's assist on Cornforth's goal tied him with Påhlsson with a team-high seven assists. LaPinta has nine points total in his first six USHL games.
Cornforth's tally was his fifth of the season, with four coming on the Saints' dominant power play. The Dubuque power play is now 12-28 this season, leading the league with a 42.9% conversion rate. The Saints have scored a power-play goal in all six games this season.
The Fighting Saints are back at home on Friday against the Omaha Lancers, before hosting the Fargo Force on Saturday. Â
