Fighting Five: Saints Host Omaha on Friday Night

Dubuque Hosts Western Conference Foe

DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (4-0-1-1, 10 pts) host the Omaha Lancers (0-4-0-0, 0 pts) in their lone visit to Dubuque this season.

Here are five things to know about the matchup:

1. Long Time, No See

Friday marks the first matchup between the Fighting Saints and the Lancers in Dubuque since Nov. 1, 2019 (DBQ, 2-1).

It's just the third matchup overall since the start of the 2021-22 season, with both of those matchups coming at the USHL Fall Classic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The two teams split both of those matchups with the Saints winning 4-2 on Sept. 24, 2021 before Omaha won 3-0 on Sept. 25, 2022.

2. Productive Pairing

Fisher Scott and Joona Väisänen have combined for a +17 rating being paired together this season. In the weekend sweep against Green Bay, they combined for six assists as well.

Väisänen had two assists in each game last weekend. Overall, Väisänen has a goal and six assists to lead all Saints defensemen in points.

Scott had a two-assist game in the Saints 9-0 victory on Friday over Green Bay and leads the team with a +9 rating.

3. Saints Special Teams

Dubuque remains on top in the USHL with a 42.9% conversion rate this season. Dubuque has scored a power-play goal in all six games so far this season.

The Saints scored four third-period power-play goals last Friday against Green Bay and have multiple power-play goals in four of their six contests.

Gavin Cornforth leads the team with four power-play tallies, while Erik Påhlsson and Chase LaPinta each have six power-play points.

4. Saints Stops

Kevin Reidler, for the second-straight week, earned USHL Goaltender of the Week honors. In Friday's emphatic 9-0 win, Reidler stopped 21 shots in his first career shutout against Green Bay.

Reidler followed that up with 30 saves in a sweep-clinching win on Saturday at Green Bay.

Overall, Reidler has won three of his five games and has a .910 save percentage. He is one of two goaltenders in the USHL to play in five games so far.

5. Looking at the Lancers

The Lancers enter play on Friday still searching for their first win of the season. Through four games, Omaha has mustered just five goals.

Two of those have come on the power-play with Chase Cheslock and David Deputy. Cheslock, a 2023 fifth round pick of the New Jersey Devils, has a pair of points this season.

Deputy, who led the Philadelphia Rebels (NAHL) with 53 points last year, scored his first career USHL goal last week against Cedar Rapids.

Puck drop for the Fighting Saints "Pink the Rink" Night Presented by Mercy One is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CST. Tickets can be found HERE.
