DUBUQUE, Iowa — Four teams will clash for the Dupaco Cowbell Cup during the 2022/23
United States Hockey League season, as the Des Moines Buccaneers join the Dubuque
Fighting Saints, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, and Waterloo Black Hawks in competition for the
trophy which has represented hockey excellence in eastern Iowa since 2011/12.
Des Moines' addition means a record total of 36 games will be included in the series, beginning
on October 15th. That date will be the first time two Dupaco Cowbell Cup games will be played
on the same evening: the Fighting Saints will travel to Des Moines, while the Black Hawks and
RoughRiders meet in Cedar Rapids. There will be eight other similar instances of double
Dupaco Cowbell Cup nights during the schedule.
"Supporting community events and bringing value to our members are both
important Dupaco initiatives," Joe Hearn, President and CEO of Dupaco Community Credit
Union, said. "As the presenting sponsor of the Dupaco Cowbell Cup series, we're supporting
four of the communities in which we have a strong presence of Dupaco Credit Union members.
This partnership allows us to help provide excellent family-friendly events to our members and
the community at large."
Dupaco Community Credit Union is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative
dedicated to the financial well-being of its members and specializing in personalized financial
counseling, money advice and education. It offers savings, loans, investments, insurance and
wealth management products for individuals and businesses. Dupaco serves 112 counties
throughout Iowa, northwest Illinois and southwest Wisconsin with more than 600 employees and
22 branch office locations.
"The Fighting Saints would like to thank Dupaco for their continued partnership of the Cowbell
Cup", Robert Miller, President of Business Operations, said. "We are excited to add the Des
Moines Buccaneers to the fold which will only add to the rivalry of this trophy. We look to get the
season kicked off soon and defend the Cowbell Cup."
"The Des Moines Buccaneers organization is thrilled to be joining the Dupaco Cowbell Cup
Series along with our peers in Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Dubuque," Buccaneer Team
President, Nate Teut, said. "The Cowbell Cup Series will further enhance the rivalries we have
with our member teams, and we are excited about the opportunity to bring that experience to
the Des Moines market. A special thank you to Dupaco Credit Union for inviting us into the
series. We look forward to showcasing Dupaco Credit Union throughout the season and
highlighting several of their financial literacy programs during our Dupaco Cowbell Cup games."
"It's great to welcome Des Moines to this competition and highlight a rivalry that dates back
more than 40 years between the Black Hawks and Buccaneers," Hawks President of Business
Operations, Joe Greene, said. "Although we are rivals on game night, each of our teams
supports the message of financial literacy which is so central to Dupaco, and we thank them for
supporting the Dupaco Cowbell Cup as a means to connect with our communities."
All four Dupaco Cowbell Cup competitors have deep roots in the USHL. The Black Hawks
organization was founded in 1962, while the Buccaneers and Fighting Saints can trace their
histories back to 1980. The RoughRiders were founded in 1999 after the club was relocated
from Mason City. Together, the cities have won 13 Anderson Cup (regular season) and 11
Clark Cup (playoff) championships during the USHL's modern era, which began in 1979.
As in prior seasons, the Dupaco Cowbell Cup champion will be determined by the results of
regular season USHL games played head-to-head between the contending teams. Two points
will be awarded for each win, with one point conferred for an overtime or shootout loss.
Due to a slight scheduling imbalance, the following games will not count in the Dupaco Cowbell
Cup standings: September 24th – Dubuque versus Des Moines (during the USHL Fall Classic);
October 1st – Waterloo at Des Moines; October 30th – Des Moines at Waterloo; December 2nd –
Dubuque at Cedar Rapids; December 3rd – Cedar Rapids at Dubuque.
The Fighting Saints will have to wait to play on home ice this season, as arena construction
continues. Opening Night is slated for November 4th as the Fighting Saints play host to the
defending Eastern Conference playoff champion Madison Capitols.
The first Cowbell Cup game played at Mystique Community Ice Center will be November 26th
against the Des Moines Buccaneers.

###
About the Dubuque Fighting Saints
The Fighting Saints returned to USHL play in the brand new Mystique Community Ice Center
during the 2010–11 season, winning the Clark Cup in their first year back in the USHL. The
Fighting Saints continued their success with a historic season in 2012–13, finishing with a
franchise best 45-11-8 record. The team claimed the Anderson Cup as the USHL's regular season
champions for the first time in 30 years, and also earned the Clark Cup for the second time in
three seasons. In August 2013, the team took the bronze medal while representing the United
States at the Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia. The Fighting Saints have reached the Clark
Cup Final three times since the organization's return, and have made it to the Clark Cup Playoffs
for eleven consecutive seasons. The club has produced a number of players that moved on to
NCAA Division I hockey and has developed several players that have risen to the professional
level. A select few have made it to the NHL level, including Johnny Gaudreau, Zemgus
Girgensons, Mike Matheson, Matt Benning and Joakim Ryan. The original Fighting Saints
competed in the USHL for 21 seasons (1980–2001). The club won the Clark Cup as playoff
champions on three occasions (1981, 1983, 1985) under head coach Jack Barzee. One of the
most well-known alumni of the original Fighting Saints was Gary Suter, a 17-year NHL veteran,
two-time Olympian, Stanley Cup champion, and member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
