Dubuque, IA — The Fighting Saints nabbed Canadian born forward Chase Hull with their third round selection in the
2023 Phase I USHL Draft earlier this month.
Hull, who the Fighting Saints selected with the 38th overall pick, was one of the leading scorers at the HEO (Hockey Eastern Ontario) U18 level. This season for the Renfrew Wolves, he compiled the sixth most points in the league on 33 goals and 30 assists in just 35 games. On a points per game basis, Hull was had the third highest total in the HEO at 1.80 points per game, among players who appeared in more than one game.
Director of Scouting
Dan Shrader shared with us his full break down of Hull as a player. You can find his breakdowns of first round pick Cooper Dennis here or his breakdown of second round defenseman Luke Brierley here. Some of Shrader's comments in this story have been edited for clarity.
"Chase just has all of the qualities you look for in a Fighting Saint," Shrader said of the Canadian forward. "He plays with determination, high-end skill, and impressive intelligence. General Manager
Kalle Larsson likened him to former Saint Ty Jackson."
That's quite the endorsement from Larsson. Ty Jackson put together two tremendous seasons in a Fighting Saints sweater amassing 98 points in 110 career USHL games before spending two seasons at Northeastern University and then this past year at Arizona State.

Shrader gushed about Hull's skating ability, "He has a springy, quick twitch stride that should be able to get to anther gear as he continues to mature. Even now, he closes in quickly on puck carriers and can eliminate their time and space with just a few strides."
"Chase just has really good habits," Shrader continued. "He supports the puck and his teammates, he back checks hard and with a purpose, and he stops on pucks. His pursuit is incredible. He's strong in that area and he can absolute hound opposing defensemen on puck retrievals."
It's evident that Hull plays the game the right way, especially without the puck. But, with the puck, he can be a dynamic threat as well.
"He's a confident kid with the puck on his stick," Shrader said of Hull's offensive game. "He plays with his eyes up and is always scanning the ice He put up incredible production at the U18 level for Renfrew and even saw some games at the CCHL (Central Canada Hockey League) level for Renfrew too."
Hull's strong all around season earned him a spot on Team Ontario at the Canada Winter Games where he put together a strong effort as well. In six games, Hull scored once and produced three assists.
"Really when it comes down to it, Chase is the type of player that our coaches can send out in any situation," Shrader added. "He is an honest player and brings a strong effort and compete level to the ice."
